Construction bamboo: pole prices in Bali right now
Bali is the one place in Indonesia where you can buy properly treated structural bamboo off a price list. Petung (Dendrocalamus asper) is the big structural pole, tali (Gigantochloa apus) the smaller framing and lining pole, and the treatment, a borax and boric acid soak followed by drying, is what separates a building material from a pole that powder post beetles will eat in two years. Prices below are indicative, ex yard, excluding transport and PPN, as of October 2026.

Treated prices are from a Belega, Gianyar yard list: borax boric minimum 3 percent, one week soak, dried below 20 percent moisture. Untreated Java depot prices are shown for comparison only; they are not the same product, and treating them yourself costs roughly as much again as the pole.
What moves the price
- Diameter and length. Price steps steeply above 13 cm diameter and 8 metres, because straight long culms are a small share of any harvest.
- Treatment. The borax soak, drying and handling roughly doubles the price of a pole and adds four to six weeks. Untreated bamboo is not a building material in Bali's climate.
- Colour and selection. Black (wulung) poles carry a Rp 15,000 to 30,000 premium. Hand selection for straightness adds 25 percent.
- Harvest season. Poles cut in the dry season carry less starch and treat better. Yards price accordingly and stock runs short in the wet season.
What to check before you pay
Ask for the treatment method and concentration in writing, the moisture content at dispatch, and the age of the culms at harvest. Three to five year old culms are structural; younger ones are not. A yard that cannot answer those three questions is selling garden bamboo.
Treated bamboo still needs design protection: a hat and boots, meaning overhangs that keep rain off and footings that keep the pole out of standing water. Most bamboo failures in Bali are detailing failures rather than material failures.
Lead times and terms
Treated poles are made to order. Expect four to six weeks from deposit, a 50 percent deposit, and transport and loading charged separately. For a structure with 200 or more poles, place the order before the architect finishes the detailing, not after.
Laminated bamboo flooring and panels are made on quote by two or three Bali and Java workshops and have no published per square metre price.
