Paras stone: what cladding and carving cost right now

Paras is the soft cream, white or grey limestone and volcanic tuff that gives Balinese architecture its carved walls, gate pillars and temple style facades. Paras Jogja is quarried in Central Java and is the cheapest. Paras Bali, often sold as Kerobokan stone, is the local Bali product and costs two to three times more. Palimanan from Cirebon is a harder yellow sandstone used in the same places. Prices below are indicative, ex works, excluding freight and PPN, as of October 2026.

Java factory gate prices are what you see on supplier websites. Bali showroom prices for the same Java stone run 15 to 30 percent higher once landed. Kerobokan paras is quarried in Bali, so it should be cheaper bought in Bali than the Jakarta list prices suggest.

What moves the price

  • Origin. Jogja paras is a commodity from a dozen factories. Kerobokan paras comes from a handful of Bali quarries with limited output, which is why it costs double.
  • Colour and consistency. White sells above cream. A batch sorted for even colour costs more than mixed run of quarry stone.
  • Thickness and finish. Standard cladding is 2 cm. Honed, grooved or bush hammered faces add labour per square metre.
  • Freight. Stone is sold ex works. At roughly 50 kg per square metre, Java to Bali freight can add 20 to 40 percent to a Jogja paras order.

Specifying it so it lasts

Paras is soft and porous. Outdoors in Bali it will green with algae within a season unless sealed, and it erodes where water runs over it constantly. Specify a penetrating sealer applied after installation and again every one to two years, keep it out of pool water lines, and use palimanan or andesite where the wall is permanently wet.

Ask the supplier for a sample from the actual batch, not a showroom piece, and check it for soft spots and iron staining. Variation across a batch is normal; large blotches are a quarry problem.

Carving

Carved paras is quoted per panel or per running metre, not per square metre. Bali carvers in Batubulan and Kerobokan work from a drawing or photograph and will quote the stone, the carving and the fixing separately. Lead time for a carved gate or relief wall is typically three to six weeks.

Getting three quotes

Because the stone is cheap and the freight is not, the comparison that matters is delivered cost per square metre including sealing. Send us the size, finish, quantity and site and we will return three vetted quotes on that basis.

Questions buyers ask

How much is paras Jogja per square metre?+

As of October 2026, paras Jogja wall cladding in 20 x 40 cm costs about Rp 100,000 to 150,000 per square metre at Java factory prices, before freight. In Bali showrooms expect 15 to 30 percent more.

What is the difference between paras Jogja and paras Bali?+

Paras Jogja is quarried in Central Java and is cheaper and slightly harder. Paras Bali, also called Kerobokan stone, is quarried in Bali, is softer and carves more easily, and costs about Rp 200,000 to 295,000 per square metre, roughly double.

Does paras stone need sealing?+

Yes, outdoors in Bali. It is porous and greens with algae quickly. Apply a penetrating sealer after installation and reseal every one to two years. Keep it away from permanently wet areas and pool water lines.
