Reclaimed teak: what it costs in Bali and Java right now
Reclaimed teak (jati bekas, jati lawas) is recovered from old Javanese houses, warehouses and railway sleepers, then cleaned, re sawn and kiln dried. It is the standard choice for villa flooring, decking, doors and furniture in Bali because it is already seasoned and does not move the way new plantation teak does. Prices below are indicative, ex works, excluding freight and PPN, as of October 2026.

| Variant | Indicative price | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Reclaimed beams, 13 x 13 to 18 x 18 cm, mixed lengths (Java yard) | Rp 12 to 15 million per m³ | Cash on grading, buyer sorts |
| Reclaimed beams, large clean sections (Bali yard, sorted) | Rp 18 to 25 million per m³ | Kiln dried, milled to order |
| Reclaimed boards, 1.5 x 20 cm (Java yard) | About Rp 35,000 per linear metre | Unplaned, nail holes |
| Reclaimed teak flooring, finished, 1.5 x 9 cm grade A | Rp 700,000 to 1,200,000 per m² | Bali supplier, kiln dried, tongue and groove |
| New plantation teak flooring 1.5 x 9 cm, for comparison | Rp 500,000 to 695,000 per m² | Grade B to A, Denpasar list |
| Reclaimed teak decking, 2 x 10 cm or 2 x 14 cm | Quote only, typically Rp 800,000 to 1,300,000 per m² | Depends on board width and length |
Java demolition yards sell by the cubic metre on grading day. Bali yards in Gianyar and Sukawati sort, kiln and mill the stock and sell finished product, which is why Bali prices per square metre look high next to Java prices per cubic metre. Always compare on the same unit and the same finish.
What moves the price
- Section size and length. Long clean beams above 15 x 15 cm are scarce and carry a premium of 30 to 50 percent over mixed stock.
- Grade. Nail holes, checks and sapwood are normal in reclaimed stock. Appearance grade for flooring costs more than structural grade for hidden framing.
- Who does the work. A Java yard sells raw. A Bali yard denails, kiln dries and mills, and charges for it. For a finished floor the Bali price is usually the honest one.
- Freight. A cubic metre of teak weighs about 650 kg. Java to Bali by truck and ferry adds roughly Rp 1.5 to 2.5 million per cubic metre.
What reclaimed actually means
Genuine reclaimed teak comes from identifiable structures: joglo houses, gudang, pendopo frames, railway sleepers and old bridges. A serious supplier can say where a batch came from and show photographs of the dismantling. Stock that is simply old plantation offcuts sold as reclaimed is common, and the difference shows up later as movement and colour variation.
Ask three things before you pay a deposit: where it was recovered, whether it has been kiln dried after cleaning, and the moisture content at dispatch. For flooring and joinery in Bali the working range is 12 to 15 percent. Above that the boards will shrink after installation.
Where to use it and where not to
Reclaimed teak is at its best indoors and under cover: flooring, wall panelling, doors, stairs and furniture. It performs well on covered terraces. For fully exposed pool decking it works, but ulin outlasts it and costs about the same per square metre, so many projects put teak inside and ulin outside.
Colour runs from pale honey to deep brown within a single batch. Specify a tolerance, or ask for a sorted selection and accept the extra cost.
Documentation
Reclaimed timber still needs a legality trail in Indonesia. Ask for the supplier's SVLK certificate or, for small yards, the purchase records for the dismantled structure. Hotel operators and foreign owned developers increasingly require this on file.
Questions buyers ask
How much does reclaimed teak cost per cubic metre in Indonesia?+
As of October 2026, mixed reclaimed teak beams from Java demolition yards cost about Rp 12 to 15 million per cubic metre. Sorted, kiln dried stock from Bali yards runs Rp 18 to 25 million per cubic metre. Freight to Bali adds roughly Rp 1.5 to 2.5 million per cubic metre.
Is reclaimed teak cheaper than new teak?+
Not usually. Raw reclaimed stock can be cheaper than Perhutani grade new teak, but finished reclaimed flooring and furniture typically costs 20 to 30 percent more than new plantation teak because of the sorting, denailing and drying involved.
What moisture content should I ask for?+
12 to 15 percent for interior flooring and joinery in Bali, measured at dispatch. Ask the supplier to send meter readings with the delivery note.
