Custom hand tufted rugs: what Indonesian makers charge right now
Every villa and hotel interior in Bali ends up needing a rug that does not exist in a shop: a specific size, a pattern from the designer's drawing, colours matched to the room. Indonesian hand tufting workshops in Jakarta, Bekasi, Bogor, Yogyakarta and Surabaya make these to order with no minimum, and the price is far more predictable than most buyers expect. Published list prices from two Java makers are shown with their pile heights. The desk quote is a real October 2026 quotation to a Bali interior design client for a 300 x 400 cm acrylic rug with a two colour organic pattern, 10 to 12 mm pile, canvas and latex backing, delivered to Lombok. Bali has no major tufting works, so expect Java pricing plus freight.
What moves the price
- Fibre. Acrylic is the villa standard and cleans well. New Zealand wool costs 35 to 40 percent more and is what hotel operators specify for public areas.
- Pile height and density. Going from 10 mm to 16 mm roughly doubles the yarn in the rug and the price with it.
- Design complexity. A two colour organic shape is simple. Fine linework, gradients and many colours slow the tufting gun and add cost per square metre.
- Who is quoting. The same specification drew Rp 550,000 and Rp 1,850,000 per square metre from two Java makers in the same week. The spread is the reason to get three quotes.
How a custom rug order runs
You send a drawing or reference image, the size, fibre, pile height and colours. The maker sends yarn poms for colour approval and a free strike off sample, typically 20 x 20 cm, of the pattern. On approval you pay a 50 percent deposit and production starts. Hand tufting a 12 square metre rug takes four to six weeks. The maker sends high resolution photographs before the balance, then packs the rug rolled and ships it.
Hand tufted rugs sit on a canvas base bonded with liquid latex. They are heavy enough not to need a separate anti slip layer on a hard floor, which is worth knowing before you pay for one.
Tax and paperwork
List prices are ex PPN. If your company needs a Faktur Pajak, 11 percent is added on the invoice. For a hotel fit out this is normal; for a private villa the owner often pays without one. Ask before the deposit, not after.

How long does a custom rug take?+
Four to six weeks of production after the deposit and colour approval, plus about a week for colour poms and a strike off sample before that, plus freight. From first enquiry to a rug on the floor in Bali, allow eight to ten weeks.
Is there a minimum order?+
No. The makers we work with quote single rugs. One listing mentions a 100 metre minimum for custom work, which is worth confirming with that maker, but single rug orders are normal in this market.
