Green sukabumi stone: pool tile prices right now
Green sukabumi is the quartzite from West Java that turns Bali pools their particular emerald colour. It is dense, holds up in salt and chlorine, stays cool underfoot and darkens when wet, which is the effect designers want. The gap between the Java factory price and what a Bali pool contractor charges for the same tile is wide, and that gap is the main reason to get quotes. Factory prices from Sukabumi and Cirebon are for non precision cut, natural finish tiles. Bali stockists sell the same product for roughly double once landed, and Bali pool contractors often quote Rp 450,000 to 900,000 per square metre supplied, which includes their margin and sometimes installation. Compare on tile size, cut precision and finish before comparing on price.
What moves the price
- Cut precision. Non precision tiles vary a few millimetres and need wider joints. Precision cut costs more and lays cleaner.
- Thickness. Standard is 1 to 2 cm. Thicker tiles for steps and copings cost more and weigh more to ship.
- Finish. Natural split face is cheapest. Honed and polished add grinding labour and show the green more evenly.
- Freight and margin. Ex works Sukabumi to a Bali site adds freight at about 45 to 60 kg per square metre, then a stockist or contractor margin. This is where most of the doubling happens.
Specifying it for a Bali pool
Order 7 to 10 percent extra for cutting waste and future repairs, because batches vary in tone and matching a tile three years later is difficult. Ask for tiles from a single quarry lot and inspect a sample box wet, not dry, since the colour you are buying is the wet colour.
Use a flexible, cement based adhesive rated for immersion and an epoxy or pool grade grout. Sukabumi is low porosity but the grout is not, and most pool tile failures in Bali are grout and adhesive problems rather than stone problems.
The stone is also used for bathroom floors and outdoor showers. In those positions a honed finish and a sealer reduce slip and algae.
